Preventive General Dentistry

Preventive Dentistry is the branch of dentistry that deals with the preservation of healthy teeth and gums and prevention of dental decay and oral diseases.

This is the science of the care required to prevent disease of the teeth and supporting structures. There are 3 levels of preventive dentistry:

  • The use of topical fluoride gel to prevent tooth decay. Regular hygienist visits to prevent gum disease. Regular dental check-ups to prevent general oral conditions, for example, oral cancer. This part also includes patient's daily at-home dental care like brushing and flossing
  • Larger and more extensive treatments like bridges and implants as a third line of prevention from further dental and oral deterioration

The purpose of preventive dentistry is to help patients avoid dental disease or to catch it in its early and more treatable stage. Dental health professionals always look for early signs of gum disease, tooth decay and oral cancer.
