The top surfaces of your teeth- where the chewing takes place- are not smooth and flat. They are cris-crossed with pits and fissures. These are where plaque can build up safe from your tooth brush and cause decay also known as cavity.
One method of preventing cavities from developing in the pits and fissures is to seal them with a special varnish called fissure sealant. To place a fissure sealant, your dentist will first clean your tooth, then apply a mild acidic gel to 'etch' the tooth surface to make it sticky. Once the tooth is washed and dried properly your dentist will paint the sealant over the pits to cover them. A special kind of light cures the sealant and makes it ready for use. The whole procedure is quick and painless.
